April 2006 Featured Band: Theatre of Tragedy

Fittingly, our first featured band is one of the bands that helped define the concept of 'beauty and the beast' gothic metal. While Theatre of Tragedy didn't invent gothic metal, their huge influence over it is undoubted. With their first three albums, culminating in arguably their most widely acclaimed album 'Aégis', they pretty much set the rules for countless other bands to follow.

Those rules, however, were abandoned completely with the release of their fourth album, 'Musique'. The sudden switch from gothic metal to synth rock was met with, let's say, mixed opinions from fans... Okay, it was a schism. Regardless, the band continued further in this direction with their fifth album, 2002's 'Assembly'.

Having just released their first album for four years — their first with new vocalist Nell Sigland, who replaced Liv Kristine in 2004 — Theatre of Tragedy are as strong as ever. 'Storm' features elements from all their previous albums combined with modern gothic rock and a dynamic new singer, and comes highly recommended by us here at RockSirens.com.
