May 2006 Featured Band: Sirenia
This month's belated featured band is Norwegian gothic metal supremos Sirenia. Masterminded by Morten Veland, Sirenia play a style of gothic metal similar to Veland's previous band, Tristania — not surprising, since he was the main creative force of both bands — though they each have their own unique style; Sirenia are generally faster, more guitar-based, and draw upon black metal influences more than Tristania.
It could be argued — in fact, I will argue — that Sirenia aren't really a female fronted band. Undoubtedly, the leader of the band is Morten Veland, who writes the lyrics and composes & arranges the music, in addition to playing guitar and singing the majority of vocal parts. Furthermore, Sirenia haven't yet kept a female vocalist for longer than a single album. Their current rock siren, Monika Pedersen, has yet to record anything with the band, having joined just last month.
